Jon Matchette Head Coach

Jon was born in Monterey, California. He attended high school at Kenmore West in Tonawanda, New York, where he was a state-qualifying swimmer in freestyle and backstroke. He then attended Niagara University, a Division 1 school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, majoring in Criminal Justice. Jon was an Academic All-American and All-Conference swimmer. He became captain his senior year and left holding three school records. Jon is still a top 10 all time performer for the Purple Eagles in multiple events. Jon received his Master's in Criminal Justice Administration while being a graduate assistant coach with Niagara University's swim team. Later, as a coach for Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club, Jon helped successfully develop their View Ridge site, and was their lead Age Group coach. Prior to SMAC, Jon also coached with the Manta Rays Aquatics Team. As Sailfish’s Head Coach, Jon will be shifting out of his previous career in law enforcement to follow his love of coaching. 

Brody Heck Assistant Coach - West Cabarrus YMCA

Brody was an age group swimmer and 14&U champ in the 50 &100 freestyle. While attending high school in Florida Brody was the 4A 50 & 100 freestyle state champion. Brody swam for Auburn Univserity for 2 years where he made the SEC team his sophomore year. Brody then transferred to Queens where he was the D2 NCAA champion in the 50 Freestyle and 5 relays his Junior year. One of the relays achieved an NCAA D2 record. Brody has coached at summer league teams throughout the Charlotte and Lake Norman areas. Along with coaching summer league, Brody also worked at a swim school where he taught entry level swimmers the basics. Brody has been able to coach and work with swimmers from all different levels and help them succeed. Throughout his swimming career and coaching expereince Brody has found a passion for extending his swimming knowledge and positive experiences to the athletes that he coaches. Brody is excited and ready to help excel your swimmers to the next level and create a great environment in and out of the pool.

Jonathan Walters Stanly Lead Coach

Coach Jonathan joined Sailfish Aquatics in 2018. He swam competitively as an age group and high school swimmer. After graduating from Texas A&M in 2015 he returned to the sport to coach. Coach Jonathan has been coaching for 5 years. He has worked with a large variety of swimmers of all ages and abilities, from beginner 10 and unders to state champion high school swimmers. Coach Jonathan believes that swimming can teach life lessons that extend far beyond the pool. He strives to share the things he has learned, both as a swimmer and coach, with the athletes that he works with.

Jennifer Newton Lead Academy Coach

Coach Jennifer is the Lead Coach of our Academy program. As a Concord native, she has been involved with swimming her entire life and has been coaching the past 30 years. During the summer, she is also the Head Coach of Sheffield Manor Stingrays summer league team. During the day she works as an Elementary School Music Teacher at AT Allen.

Tabitha Zimmer Assistant Coach

Hailing from Sheboygan WI, swimming in many capacities has always been a part of her life. Competitively, she started with the local YMCA swim team, then on to high school and one year as an undergraduate. She continued her swimming through dozens of triathlons including Ironman and a 9.2 mile open water swim in Key West, FL. After college, she made the big move to SW Florida for Law School. There she began working for The Community School of Naples as their Varsity Coach and in conjunction worked with T2 Aquatics as their  Lead Age Group and Senior Development Coach. 13 years of 100% humidity 365 Days a year was enough and she recently made the move to Charlotte where she is looking forward to growing as a coach and sharing her skills and experience with our Sailfish athletes. She continues her swimming through her journey as a Triathlete and is looking forward to make North Carolina her home.

 

Jenny Schmidt Assistant Coach

Jenny grew up outside of Tampa, Florida where she began teaching swim lessons at age 12. She worked in aquatics most summers before and following her graduation from Florida State, where she picked up a degree in Math Education. Jenny moved to Concord, N.C. and began teaching and coaching at Central Cabarrus High School — she spearheaded the inaugural season for Central’s swim team in 1998-99. Jenny continued to teach lessons and coach summer league swim after quitting her teaching career to raise her three children. Most recently, Jenny has coached cross country, swim and track at Hickory Ridge High School and retired from summer league after 10 years with the YMCA Blue Dolphins. She now enjoys swimming with Sailfish Masters and working with College Transitions during the day.

Coach Jordan has been immersed in swimming her entire life. She swam year-round as an age group and high school athlete, and competed for Sailfish Aquatics during her last two years of high school. This May, she graduated from UNCW, where she also swam club throughout her college years. Jordan works remotely as a Web Developer and Designer. Her passion for swimming extends beyond her own training—she spent five years coaching the Laurel Park Sharks summer league team and has taught swim lessons since high school. Coach Jordan is thrilled to continue sharing her love for the sport, especially with the team that inspired her during her own high school years!
